This theatre complex is the cultural centre of the University of Stellenbosch. The theatre was established in 1965 by the then rector, Prof. H.B. Thom, and renamed to honour the legacy of the struggle poet, Adam Small. Since its early days, the theatre has been an incubating environment for dramaturgs and actors, from all walks of life, both local and abroad. The Adam Small Theatre Complex was renovated and now boasts world-class theatre and conferencing facilities. The Adam Small Theatre Project, housed within the Central Events and Conferencing Office (CECO), aims to ensure the longevity of theatre in the Adam Small Theatre Complex in Stellenbosch.
The project’s mission is to establish consistent professional theatre productions throughout the year, connecting the shows to the space and the town. In doing so keeping the Adam Small Theatre Complex alive with a curated season of interesting, contemporary, and challenging performances, providing a platform for both established and emerging talent.
